Marmalade fun
I think Paddington must wrap his sandwiches very very carefully when he puts them under his hat because marmalade is a sticky business. I’ve been learning all about it because Caroline and I made some recently. Firstly you have to get special oranges and they’re not at all sweet, i tried a it was more sour and bitter than a lemon (which I have also tried). You have to add sugar to it so it tastes nice, i think that’s why it gets extra sticky, it bubbles away in a pan slowly getting darker. You have to make sure you take all the pips out of the orange, I helped with this using a long spoon (so I could keep my distance from the orange!), we flicked the pips into a bowl, some of mine went in, but there were a number to pick up afterwards. My favourite bit was ladling it into the jars, I got to use a funnel, then we put all the lids on and made labels. I think I will probably keep to storing any emergency sandwich supply in a box, unless someone can come up with a design for purpose built marmalade sandwich carrying hat!
